Mariel J. Giletto, Esq.

Shareholder and Chair, Corporate Law Department
Parker McCay P.A.

What inspired you to join/start your business?

I was inspired to become a corporate attorney and partner at Parker McCay because I wanted to help other local business owners be successful. I grew up in a small business family and understand that success in business takes heart, but it also requires the careful development of efficient business processes, the ability to creatively solve complex problems, and the practicality to carefully plan for the future.

What challenges have you faced as a woman entrepreneur and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge I have faced is breaking into established networks for business development. This is important for building a successful practice, so I have faced this challenge by volunteering my time with causes that are personally important to me. I’m a fierce advocate for women and have developed many new network connections while fighting for causes I believe in. My time and energy has been put to the best use doing community service, and, at the same time, has given me rewarding experiences both personally and professionally.

What was your most satisfying moment in your career?

In my journey to become an attorney, the most satisfying moment personally was passing the bar exam and knowing that I achieved my goals, and my dreams and future were right ahead of me. Being made partner was also pretty great.

How do you define success?

Being considered a trusted advisor by my clients is how I define success. My clients know exactly how much I care about their success and how hard I will work for them. My clients know that I will always find a creative solution to the most complex issue, but most importantly, they also know that I care about their business like it's my own. This is success, and it means the most to me.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Multitasking is overrated. It’s best to be focused on exactly one thing at a time. Ultimately, staying focused and staying away from multitasking is the best way to be the most productive and efficient in your work.

What women inspire you and why?

This changes all the time. Right now, I am inspired by Michelle Obama, Tara Westover, and Glennon Doyle. All three have unique experiences, but the common thread is how authentic they are about their journeys.

What advice would you give to other women entrepreneurs?

Being successful is going to take a lot of grit and determination. Remember that failure is part of the process. The key to success is remaining focused on your goals, and if you get knocked down, get back up and keep going!

Describe yourself in three words.

Determined, loyal, and honest.

Fill in the Blank:

  • When I face a challenge, I... face it head on.

  • If I could go back in time, I would tell myself… you’re going to be okay.

  • The one thing I couldn’t live without is… my family!

  • By this time next year, I will be… going to all the social gatherings I can!

  • The best thing that happened to me last week was… I celebrated my son's eighth birthday with my family.

  • To get my creative juices flowing, I… organize myself so there is no clutter!
