Exceptional Gloucester County Teen Wins NJ State Competition
Boys & Girls Clubs of Gloucester County’s (BGCGC) very own teen, Nzingha Rothmiller is making waves in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Youth of the Year competition. Last night at Montclair State University, 300 guests gathered in celebration of the 2019 NJ Youth of the Year Gala. Competing against 18 exceptional teens, Nzingha now holds the title of the NJ State Youth of the Year. She will receive a $15,000 college scholarship thanks to Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. She now moves on to the Regional Competition which will be held on June 25th in New York City. Congratulations to Nzingha on all her accomplishments at such a young age!
The Youth of the Year is a national competition in its 72nd year, and it encourages candidates to embody character & service, academic excellence, and healthy lifestyles. BGCGC has been coaching Nzingha to improve her skills in: public speaking, teamwork and leadership, event participation and relational ability. By fostering these abilities, the Youth of the Year may be given opportunities such as meeting congressional and legislative leaders, traveling across the United States, and receiving scholarships for postsecondary education.
Nzingha Rothmiller aspires to be a lawyer/Supreme Court Justice, and plans to work towards accomplishing her educational and career goals. She is currently in 10th grade at Woodbury High School, where she holds a 4.2 GPA. She is a member of the drama club, varsity basketball team and she is a Student Representative for the Board of Education. Being a Boys & Girls Club member for 7 years, she has developed her own cooking show to demonstrate healthy habits amongst her fellow Club members.
At the end of this month, Nzingha, along with other state winners, will be competing for the Northeast Regional Youth of the Year title. Winners receive an additional $10,000 in college scholarships, renewable for 4 years. The national competition will be held in Washington D.C. in September of 2019, where 6 selected youths will compete for the National Youth of the Year title. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year receives an additional $25,000 scholarship that is renewable for up to 4 years!
BGCGC is proud to be making a difference in children’s lives at their Glassboro and Paulsboro locations. None of this could be made possible without the support of their community! You can help with our continued success by supporting our annual fundraising event taking place on October 17, 2019.
